Oddly Lovely

Hey guys! I hope everyone's having a great holiday weekend. Today I'd like to introduce you to Cat from Oddly Lovely. Take it away, sister.

What motivated you to start blogging:

Honestly, I didn’t really even know blogs were a thing until I started working at a small social media marketing company 3+ years ago. I had just graduated from college and went from studying Latin to basically working with bloggers 40 hours a week. Most people would think that is MORE fun, but it was repetitive and often boring work. My favorite part of the job was the fascinating posts I would read. I learned more about motherhood than I ever wanted to know from all the mommy bloggers I worked with! I was very struck by how bloggers are so warm and open, both with me as their brand/agency contact and with their readers, and I began to feel very inspired by their creativity. After working on the agency side of blogging for a few years, I finally decided to try out blogging for myself.

What kind of blogger would you consider yourself to be:

In very short words, I’m a lifestyle blogger. Oddly Lovely was inspired by the little, simple pleasures that make life satisfying and fulfilling. For me, that mostly means easy-to-do recipes, thoughtfully curated outfits, beauty tips, pet product reviews, and an assortment of other things that strike my fancy, such as books and apps. I know from my social media experience that “blogs on one topic tend to perform better,” but that just wasn’t me – blogging is fundamentally supposed to be FUN. So I just photograph and write about what makes me happy, and hope that it makes my readers happy too.

When you’re not blogging, what other things do you like to get into:

I spend way, WAY too much time with my dog, Ru. She comes with me to work every day, and we spend a lot of time at the beach near my house or hiking up in the hills of Berkeley and Oakland. Lately we’ve been training to get her Canine Good Citizen certificate (the same one therapy and service dogs get) and training for rally obedience, a competitive dog sport. I’m also kind of a crazy foodie – I love cooking and tinkering in the kitchen, but I also watch way too many food TV shows (hello Iron Chef America and anything with Anthony Bourdain). One of the amazing things about living in the San Francisco Bay and the East Bay in particular is we have an incredible amount of quirky restaurants, food trucks, and ethnic eating options. I don’t even want to admit how much of my paycheck I spend on Thai and Pakistani food.

Share some of your most favorite posts with us and tell us why they’re your favorite:

I’m slightly embarrassed how new I am to blogging, but I’ve been giving Oddly Lovely 110% and think I have some solid posts to show from it. I’m kind of a cocktail snob, so I shared my tips for making infused vodka – it’s SUCH an easy process, I truly believe everyone should try it. I love how the photos turned out for my chicken tortilla soup recipe, and it’s one of my favorite dinners right now. My readers seemed to really like this post on ways to make your lipstick stay all day, plus I’ve finally started to get the hang of photographing beauty products. My boyfriend helped me photograph this particular outfit, which is some of my favorite photographs ever taken of me. Finally, I don’t really consider myself to be a “funny blogger” (I wish I was!), but I think this post on 5 beauty “essentials” I can’t afford turned out pretty humorous.

What’s something that’s made you laugh recently:

Well, I just caught my dog laying like this under my desk at the office! Truly a creature of grace and dignity.

    1. Nice to meet you too, Jo-Anne! It's definitely easier to hang out with a friend's dog than have your own, haha. Fortunately Ru has short hair, so she's pretty clean.

  8. I literally JUST started blogging TODAY! (so don't laugh at my seriously bare blog just yet.. work in progress!) but I adore this idea of meeting new bloggers. I also love that photo of your dog! Very cute! As I type, mine is snoring away happily beside me.

Anywho - I have just followed Yoga Pants and now I'm off to do the same to you Cat, because anyone who loves Thai food and dogs is a friend of mine :)

    1. Aww, thank you! I'll tell you the trick - it's Photoshop, not Instagram, haha. Photoshop is your best friend if you aren't intimidated by the steep learning curve. That chicken tortilla soup recipe is incredible! Here it is, if you want to try: http://oddlylovely.com/chicken-tortilla-soup/

  11. So great to meet new and interesting bloggers. I love that you're such a dog person - I went to a collie dog show the other day (I'm seriously considering getting a female called Fly.. yes.. inspired by the movie Babe.. about the pig. Blush) anyway, it was super cool to watch the dogs show off their tricks. I always thought it would be awful to watch it and was sort of against it but now I'm really impressed!!

See you have read GirlBoss from your pic at the top too! I just finished it and found it really great. Anyway, about to go check out your blog!

    1. It's great to meet you too, Jade! Wow, a collie show sounds pretty incredible. A well trained dog is a beautiful thing to watch. Dog competitions are LOT of fun for the dogs, so it's pretty different from a rodeo or another event where the animals are scared. Ru really loves going to our dog competition classes because she gets lots of praise and treats, haha.

#GirlBoss was SO good. I was far more impressed by it than I was even anticipating! I'll have to review it on my blog soon :)
